6 Skills Needed For Laborer JobsAlthough they are considered on the lowest rung of the social ladder, laborers are the most important people in the country. Almost no one could do their jobs without laborers. No matter how many people get college degrees, someone still has to do the actual work. The entire character of the U.S. was built on labor.

Laborers duties are wide and varied. Laborers dig trenches, put up walls and scaffolds, lay foundations, plastering walls and ceilings, and installing windows. Laborers cut down and plant trees, build roads through the wilderness, repair and perform maintenance on dams, roads, highways, load and unload trucks and train cars, wash cars, aeroplanes, trains, boats, and buildings, dispose of garbage, work on public water and sewer pipes, set electrical wire poles, take care of livestock, plant and harvest crops, and much more. Most of the work is done outdoors, meaning you are exposed to the elements. Sometimes the work is dangerous, and may require you to work at great heights, or in fast moving water. You may have to work in severe thunderstorms, snow storms and high winds, or in blistering heat.

To be a good laborer, you need to possess a lot of different skills, depending on what kind of work you are doing, but there are 6 main skills you should have regardless of your situation:

1. Dependability – one of the most important skills.

In many cases, work cannot start until you get there, if you don’t show up, the company may have to lose a day of work until they can replace you. Add to this the fact that your co-workers will probably lose pay as well.

2. Attention to Detail is a critical skill for a laborer.

Most of the time, no one will be watching over your shoulder, and they will depend on you to perform the task correctly, and notify someone instantly if there are any problems. They are trusting you to perform well.

3. Cooperation

This is a much-needed skill, because you will have to be working with other people, and arguments and hostility slow a job down. You must be able to control your anger, and be able to work well with others.

4. Stress Tolerance

You will be doing very strenuous work, in extreme environments sometimes, so patience can wear thin at times. However, you must be able to push through it and continue to follow instructions, and accept criticism without losing your cool.

5. Power and Hand Tools

You will be working with lots of different kinds of tools and you need to have a basic knowledge of how to use them. You should be familiar with common tools such as hammers, saws, pliers, and screwdrivers, as well as more sophisticated tools such as jackhammer’s, cut-off saws, chainsaws, impact wrenches, drills, circular saws, etc….

6. Techniques

You will, at times, be assisting various tradesmen  so you should have a working knowledge of brick-laying and stone masonry, carpentry, drywall, plumbing, electrical, foundations, working with concrete and cement, and more.

The more skills you possess, the better your chances of securing a job, and the more pay you can get.
